Jewel Duke Eklu, painter in Adjiringanor, Accra

Eklu was born in 1987 to a Ghanaian father and a Togolese mother.

His mother, a member of a Christian NGO, allowed him to meet people from all walks of life and all origins. So, very early on, he bathed in a melting pot that opened up the world to him. Eklu was educated at Ghanatta College of Arts and Design in Accra; renowned institution in the artistic field.

He works mainly on acrylic, often in large formats. Eklu likes to paint according to his feelings, not being locked into any specific artistic movement. The painting is exploratory and he continues to explore. This reflects the themes and series discussed. In this case, his latest series is based on the notions of betting and lottery, to which life subjects us.

Initially Christian by his family affiliation, he now turns to voodooism. Thus, in nature everything seems to him to be linked and all kingdoms are one. The presence of animals in his paintings is a precious testimony to this.

The figure of the feminine, the Ashanti symbols as well as everyday scenes are also found in many paintings.

“I have always loved art and I’m happy to paint… I had to practice constantly to master my art.” Jewel Duke Eklu
